Active Workplace Solutions is totally committed to reducing its impact on the environment. As an ISO:14001 Environmental Management accredited business, we have a responsibility to provide Sustainable Clearances to ensure that all our waste, and yours, is cleared in a sustainable manner.

The Need For Sustainable Waste Management Practices

Waste plastic in the ocean, greenhouse gasses such as methane in the air; it's no secret that our planet is suffering. Irresponsible waste disposal practices are negatively affecting the planet and the environment around us. In the future, the United Kingdom could suffer an increased risk of flooding in both inland and coastal areas as a result of global warming and climate change.

As an environmentally responsible business, we take our commitment to the environment very seriously. This includes implementing the waste hierarchy our 'Waste not, Want not' scheme; reusing and recycling wherever possible, and disposing of all non-recyclable rubbish in responsible and ethical methods that comply with the latest guidelines and legislation.

What If Disposal Is Unavoidable?

If waste disposal is unavoidable and an item of office furniture cannot be disposed through more preferable means, we will ensure that the waste item is disposed of in a manner that follows the latest directives and environmental guidelines. In order to reduce disposal costs for our clients, we hold a current waste carrier licence, so we don't need to use the services of third party waste carriers.

The Waste Hierarchy

Many people are familiar with 'The Three Rs', Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Whilst the hierarchy is similar, it goes into more detail regarding different methods of waste management and lists them in order of most preferable to least preferable.

  1. Prevention
The most preferable method of waste management is to prevent items from becoming waste in the first place. This can include things such as, reducing the amount materials you use in order to reduce waste.

  2. Reuse
Some items of waste can be reused, thus being removed from the waste stream. For example, an item of office furniture your business no longer wants that is in good condition could be sold as second hand in order to prevent the item from being disposed of.

  3. Recycle
The word recycle means to turn an item of waste into a new product or substance. In the office interiors industry, there are lots of opportunities for recycling. For example, office environments generate waste such as paper and plastic. Consider how many trees are cut down every year to provide businesses with their supply of paper, think about how much paper (and how many trees) could be saved if offices swapped their paper from virgin sourced paper to alternatives sourced from recycled materials.

  4. Recovery
If you cannot prevent, reuse, or recycle the waste, the next most preferable method is recovery. This method of disposal involves recovering the energy from the waste in the form of fuel, heat, and power.

  5. Disposal
The least preferable method of waste management is disposal in landfill or incineration without energy recovery.
